Day 6: Mary, Did You Know? by Danny Gokey

Danny Gokey – “Mary, Did You Know?”

I love that this song focuses on Mary’s position in the Christmas story. I’m not a mother yet, but I wonder how it would feel to birth the Son of God? Can you imagine the privilege and burden of having to sacrifice your child for the sins of the world?

When the angel told Mary that she was chosen to deliver Jesus, I wonder how much she knew.

Did she know He’d die on the cross to save the world? Did she know He’d do miracles and wonders?

I love the line, “When you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of God.” Mary was uniquely entrusted to care for the Savior of the world. Can you imagine having a child that never sinned? What an honor!

And my favorite part of the song, “That sleeping child you’re holding is the Great I AM.”

Jesus is the Messiah. The one promised to come for many generations. He is God. He is the Great I AM!

Sometimes it is easy to romanticize the Nativity and forget that there were real humans with real emotions behind it. The faith and courage it took for Mary to be the Lord’s servant and mother of Jesus is astounding. No doubt there were times she feared or was overwhelmed. Talk about being “burdened with glorious purpose”, as Loki would say. Joseph also chose to believe God’s truth and support Mary as she fulfilled the Lord’s will. It would’ve been easy for him to accuse her of things or to leave her stranded, yet he chose to protect her and see that Jesus made it safely into the world.
