Day 8: O Holy Night by Peter Hollens and Jamie Grace #25SongsTilChristmas

O Holy Night – Peter Hollens feat. Jamie Grace

I once heard someone describe “O Holy Night” as the “Star-Spangled Banner of Christmas songs” and I have to agree.

It’s a beautiful song that captures the Christmas story perfectly.

Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and a soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morning

The first verse shows our utter need for a Savior. We were lost in sin. Weary. Tired. Hopeless. But when Jesus came, He brought a thrill of hope. A new and glorious morning because we no longer had to be slaves to sin!

Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name, all oppression shall cease

These lines in the second verse show what happens when we truly do what Jesus says. His love breaks down dividing lines. His good news brings peace. Unity can be achieved through God’s love.

What a Holy Night indeed when Jesus was born. The world truly changed forever. Even if that change seems lost in the craziness of the world today, the potential for unity and peace are still there.
